Mess Talk

ANNOUNCEMENT   Mrs Galf has been badly unwell for the last few weeks, making it impossible for me to update this website.  When she is back to normal, the website will soon be the same.  In the meantime here is a recycling to keep things on the move….

An unpublished cartoon, previously shown on this website in August 2010.

One earned an ‘R’ (for Runaway) in the ship’s muster book by being overdue back from leave, called a run ashore in this case, which was usually a short leave on a foreign station (leave at home ports was rare, because desertion was more likely).  Actually, desertion was less of a problem than popular fiction would lead us to believe, although late return from a run ashore (called being ‘adrift’) was always favourite with some.

Once Bitten

Cartoon strip published in Warships IFR magazine July 2011.

This was not posted at the time, for family difficulty reasons, but here it is now for you.

I hope the joke needs no explanation – if it does, are you sure you are up to this magazine?

(If there are two strips here – sorry – I’ll try harder next time – and if you see it, Graham, HELP!)

"AB & OS" is a cartoon following the colourful lives of two sailors during the time of the Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815). The strip has been regularly featured in Warships IFR magazine (Published monthly) until recently. I'll be adding new cartoons here as they are published.

Hopefully, as well as putting a smile on your face perhaps you'll learn a little history of the period so be sure to read the descriptions for each comic if something zooms right over your head like a jumbo jet.

And check out the Roots page for Abie and Os's background, the Come Ashore page for a bit more fun and the Naval Stuff page for a bit more learning. If you want to spend some money, then the Shop page or the Donate button will be of interest to you.
